Tricky’s debut album, Maxinquaye (named after his mother Maxin Quaye), released in 1995 is a timeless, album that set the bar for all other trip-hop artists to contend with. The former Massive Attacker’s new vocal collaboration with teenage girlfriend, Martina Topley-Bird proved to be the perfect tool to channel that mysterious, cold, damp vibe to millions of listener’s worldwide.
Hell Is Around The Corner, released July 24, 1995; peaked at #12 on the UK singles charts. Which made that single the best out of 5 other singles released from that album.
In Hell Is Around The Corner, the underlying balance of hip-hop, soul, rock, and electronica mixed with the obvious lyrical expressions is completely ingeniously perverse. So perverse that its no wonder why so many people agree that Maxinquaye is one of the best albums of the 90′s.
The track was sampled from Isaac Hayes’, “Ike’s Rap II”, and along with Portishead’s 1995 release of Glory Box.
The lyrics are from, “Eurochild”, a song by Massive Attack. Stussy? I know the first time I heard the reference to the clothing label in the lyrics, my heart almost dropped! How much more 80′s could we get?? Ok maybe Mossimo, and Jordache might be a little more 80′s but certainly not THAT much more, right?
And what drug do u lick off of foil? WHOA! He is absolutely wilder than people could imagine!!
Oh and lets not forget to take our fill, take our fill, take our FEEL!!!
P.S. For the record, I’m pretty sure Portishead had nothing to do with this track…….. SMOOCHES!!

I stand firm for a soil
I lick a rock off foil
So reduce me, seduce me,
Dress me up in Stussy.
Hell is round the corner where I shelter.
Isms and schisms, we’re living on a skelter
If you believe I’ll deceive common sense says you are thief
Let me take you down the corridors of my life.
And when you walk, do you walk to your preference
No need to answer ’till…
I take further evidence.
I seem to need a reference to get residence
A reference to your preference to say,
I’m a good neighbour, I trudge,
So judge me for my labour,
Lobotomy ensures my good behavior
The constant struggle ensures my insanity.
Passing the indifference ensures the struggle for my family
We’re hungry, beware of our appetite.
Distant drums bring the news of a kill tonight.
The kill which I share with my passengers.
We take our fill, take our fill, take a feel.
I stand firm for a soil
I lick a rock off foil
So reduce me, seduce me,
Dress me up in Stussy.
Confused by different memories,
Details of Asian remedies
Conversations, of what’s become of enemies.
My brain thinks bomb-like,
So I listen he’s a calm type.
As I grow
And as I grow, I grow collective.
Before the move sit on the perspective.
Mr. Quail’s in the crevice
And watches from the precipice.
Imperial passage.
Heat from the sun someday slowly passes,
Until then, you have to live with yourself
Until then, you have to live with yourself
I stand firm for a soil
Lick a rock off foil
So reduce me, seduce me,
Dress me up in Stussy.
Hell is round the corner where I shelter.
Isms and schisms, we’re living a skelter
If you believe I’ll deceive and common sense says you are the thief
Let me take you down the corridors.
My brain thinks bomb-like, bomb-like
My brain thinks bomb-like, bomb-like, bomb-like
My brain thinks bomb-like,
Beware of our appetite
